Colter & Galloway
Watch the NEW video Dream Where You Dare : The Story Behind the Album just released on YouTube. A wonderful story full of reminiscences, photos and music.
Learn how a rediscovered and remixed 1978 studio recording featuring the original songs of Trish Colter and Nora Galloway became a 2024 release. Nora passed away in February 2023, but her spirit lives on in this wonderful recording and video.
This recording of Colter & Galloway from– wait for it –1978 was rediscovered in the spring of 2024. Nora Galloway and I formed a duo in 1975 in London, Ontario and played the folk circuit until 1980.
The original songs were recorded in a Toronto studio, recently transferred from a cassette tape (!) to digital and have been given a fresh remix.
Nora, a well-known figure on the bluegrass/ country/ folk music scene played and recorded with Prairie Wing, The Sirens, The Galloway Band and Nora Galloway and the Tearjerkers, among others. She won the Central Canadian Bluegrass Award for female vocalist of the year in 2005, she was a BX 93 Country Awards winner in 2006 and a Jack Richardson Bluegrass Award winner in 2011. In 2019, she was inducted into the London Music Hall of Fame.
Nora passed away in February 2023-a huge talent gone far too soon. You can check out some of her other music on Bandcamp.
Thanks to all the musicians who played on this recording all those years ago and Nora’s family for supporting this recording project. And very special thanks to Rod Phelan, who did the original mix in 1978 and the remix in 2024 and Don Spanner, who produced the original recording and then discovered the cassette tape in March 2024, and who has so enthusiastically helped to bring this music to light again.
Rediscovering this music takes me back to those wonderful days when London was a mecca for folk musicians, Nora and I played with such joy, and life held so much promise……
“Back in 1977 Trish Colter and Nora Galloway formed a duo, known locally in London as Colter & Galloway. It was a magical union of two very fine and exceptional talents. They began playing the Southwestern Ontario folk circuit – Change of Pace, Uncle Billy’s, Home County Folk Festival and numerous clubs in and around London.
At the time, I was fresh out of Fanshawe having earned some production chops via the Creative Electronics/Music Industry Arts program, so I’d made some good friends who had recording equipment. One of those good buddies was Rod Phelan. Rod had moved back to Toronto and had a small studio setup in the living room of his house on Eglinton Ave. So, I arranged some rehearsals which culminated in a recording session for Colter & Galloway – an all-nighter in which 5 songs were recorded as a demo. Nora & Trish played guitars and vocals, Pacy Shulman played bass, Mike Kelly played percussion, and Dick Van Raadshooven added some brilliant cello parts and, on one song, a banjo.
Recently, a cassette recording of that demo was discovered. The tape was 45+ years old and had seen better days, but we managed to properly transfer the masters to digital format. This allowed us to apply software to separate the vocals from the instruments (the same technique used on the recently unreleased and resurrected Beatles song). We then added some post-production effects and arrangements to fill out the sound and musicality of the songs. The results are astonishing and, hopefully, true to the unique chemistry of what was Colter & Galloway. Enjoy. “
