Trish Colter
Trish’s dedication to music education has earned her a reputation as one of the leading vocal music educators in Canada. In addition to many years of private piano, theory and voice study, she earned her BA and BEd degrees at the University of Western Ontario. Trish was Head of the Vocal Department in Humber College’s Jazz Music Program from 1987 until her retirement in 2011 where she developed the vocal curriculum for both the three-year diploma program and the four-year degree program.Trish was awarded the Humber College Distinguished Faculty Award in 2000, the NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) Award Of Excellence in Teaching in 2001, and the College Innovation of the Year Award in 2009.

Under Trish’s direction, the award- winning Humber College Vocal Jazz Ensemble  developed a reputation as one of the top vocal jazz combos in Canada and was featured in concerts at such venues as the Brandon Jazz Festival, Ontario Vocal Festival, MusicFest Canada, the IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Conference, the Hummingbird Centre and  the Four Seasons Centre for the Arts. The combo performed a variety of concerts in the Humber College Student Concert Series and conducted a series of concerts/clinics in high schools across Southern Ontario. In December of 1990 the ensemble provided the principal back up vocals for renowned children’s entertainer, Fred Penner at the O’Keefe Centre in Toronto. It also performed in the spring matinee jazz series at the celebrated Toronto club, Top O’ The Senator, and in the duMaurier Downtown Jazz Festival Workshops, a series which Trish helped co-ordinate for a number of years. In 2011, the group was selected as the only nonprofessional group to perform a concert in Brampton’s Rose Studio Theatre Jazz Series.

In her search for unusual material for the group,Trish began writing choral arrangements for vocal jazz and rhythm section in the mid 1990’s. Many of her arrangements and compositions can be heard on Humber Recordings New Standards Series and on the two vocal combo CD’s, Sending Light and Sapphire Sea.

Trish was also on the Jazz Faculty for National Music Camp from 1992 to 2001 and was on the Resource Team for the International Association for Jazz Education 2006-8.  Her inspiring workshops, both for ensemble and solo voices, have gained her a stellar reputation as a clincian in high schools, colleges and universities. She has adjudicated for and been a featured clinician at many music festivals across Canada and the United States.

Re: Concert at Rose Studio Theatre Feb 2011
“I want to thank you again for the wonderful performance by your vocal ensemble and instrumentalists on February 25 as part of our Studio Jazz Series here at Rose Theatre Brampton. Judging by the feedback, the evening was a huge success – and a sell-out audience as well! We could not be happier. I hope your students enjoyed themselves and had a good experience. They are excellent ambassadors of both the college and the world of jazz music. You have much to be proud of.”
Gabriella Currie | Coordinator, Studio Jazz Series, Brampton Rose Theatre

Re: Brandon Jazz Festival 2007
“The Humber College Vocal Jazz Combo wowed the audiences for all five of their sold-out concerts at the Brandon Jazz Festival. No other concert sold out all five performances. With impeccable poise and maturity they thrilled and entertained their audiences and left them wanting more. The Humber College Vocal Jazz Combo certainly demonstrated what this genre is all about and the level that every group should aspire to. They were a huge hit at the 2007 Brandon Jazz Festival.”
